Artist Statement

Take a closer look. In this painted reality, everything is not what it seems.

By observing and taking inspiration from the environment around me, I notice secondary and unintended marks made in both the studio and domestic spaces. These overlooked marks, be it a stain on a tea towel or paint splatters on the floor, tell a story of process and leaves me to question how they were made.

I recreate these unintentional marks as paintings and sculptures, thus elevating and recontextualising them within a fine art setting where I embed them with narrative to explore their meaning. By creating my works within the illusionary trompe l’oeil art style, I deceive the viewer into thinking the painted subjects, such as masking tape, paint splatters, and pieces of paper, are in fact real and therefore unassuming.

Hidden in plain sight, my works encompass hours of labour that intend to go unnoticed for the deception to work. This humorous paradox of viewing the work without necessarily “seeing” the work situates my practice within a conceptual context which I want to explore further.
